IELTS Speaking Part 1: Keyboards and typing
The questions
Asked in this order, in one sitting.
- Do you type every day?
- When did you learn to type?
- How do you improve your typing?
How to answer it
An unusual topic, which is exactly why it works as a warm-up — there is no rehearsed answer to fall back on. Take the three questions as present, past and process: what you type, when you picked it up and whether anyone taught you, and whether you have ever deliberately tried to get faster.
What moves the band
- Typing lexis: touch-type, hunt and peck, muscle memory, I never had formal lessons, I picked it up.
- If you have never tried to improve, say so and explain why — an honest 'no' with a reason outscores an invented 'yes'.
These are candidate recalls. These are questions reported by test-takers after their exams, not official or leaked IELTS material. Wording varies by test version, location and memory. Use them for timed practice — never as a prediction of what you will be asked.
