IELTS Speaking Part 1: Mobile phones
The questions
Asked in this order, in one sitting.
- When did you get your first phone?
- How much do you use it now?
How to answer it
The first question is past simple with an age or a year, plus one detail about the phone itself. The second is present, and it invites a screen-time number — give it, then say what most of it goes on and whether you would change that.
What moves the band
- Past-to-present contrast: back then it was just for calls, whereas now I'd struggle to get through a day without it.
These are candidate recalls. These are questions reported by test-takers after their exams, not official or leaked IELTS material. Wording varies by test version, location and memory. Use them for timed practice — never as a prediction of what you will be asked.
