What changed in 2026
On 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT moved to a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, aligned to the CEFR — a score of 5 corresponds to CEFR C1. Your overall score is now the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band, exactly like IELTS. For a two-year transition, score reports also show a comparable 0–120 overall score, so use whichever scale your university still lists.
Reading your new score
On the 1–6 scale, 5 (C1) is the level many universities expect, and 5.5–6 is upper-C1 to C2. Because your overall is an average, lifting your weakest section is the fastest way up.
