    Mathematical skills are more important in real life than communication skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

    How to answer it

    A comparison prompt, so a fence-sitting essay fails Task Response. Decide which skill you are backing and hold it across both body paragraphs. The strongest line is usually a partial disagreement: numeracy is necessary in a narrow set of decisions (loans, dosage, budgets), while communication decides whether any of that reaches another person — then argue that the second is used more hours of the day. Define what you mean by 'real life' in the introduction so the comparison has a floor.

    What a 6.5 sounds like

    It is often said that mathematical skills are more useful in everyday life than the ability to communicate with others. In my opinion, both of these skills are important and it is difficult to say that one is better than the other.

    On the one hand, mathematics is clearly necessary in daily life. People need to calculate their income and their expenses, to understand the interest rate on a loan, and to check that they have been given the correct change in a shop. In addition, many well-paid professions such as engineering, accounting and computer programming are based on mathematics, so students who are good at this subject usually have better career opportunities. Without basic numeracy, a person can easily be cheated or can make serious financial mistakes.

    On the other hand, communication skills are also extremely important. In almost every job, workers have to explain their ideas to colleagues, write emails and attend meetings. A person who is very intelligent but cannot express himself will not be promoted, because managers cannot see the value of his work. Moreover, communication is important in personal life as well, for example in a marriage or in a friendship, where misunderstandings can destroy a relationship.

    In conclusion, both mathematical ability and communication ability play a significant role in modern life, and I believe that the best situation is when a person develops both of them together, because they support each other in different situations.

    Why it scores what it scores: The English here is comfortably good enough: paragraphs are organised, examples are relevant, and the linking is controlled. Task Response is what caps it at 6.5. The prompt asks to what extent the candidate agrees with a comparison, and the essay declines to compare — it argues both are important and lands on developing both. The answer plan warns about exactly this: on a comparison prompt, a fence-sitting essay cannot score well however clean the language is.

    What an 8 sounds like

    By real life the statement presumably means the decisions adults make outside a classroom: managing money, doing a job, raising children, getting through a day with other people in it. Measured that way, I largely disagree. Numeracy is indispensable in a narrow band of high-stakes moments, whereas communication is the medium through which almost everything else is conducted.

    The case for mathematics deserves to be made properly, because it is stronger than it looks. A person who cannot compare an annual percentage rate with a flat fee will be quietly overcharged for decades, and the compounding cost of that innumeracy is far larger than the embarrassment of a badly worded email. Medication doses, mortgage terms and pension contributions all punish arithmetic errors severely and silently. This is not a small concession.

    It is, however, a concession about frequency rather than importance. Those calculations are occasional and, increasingly, delegated to software that does not make slips. Communication cannot be delegated in the same way. A doctor who has read the dosage correctly still has to persuade a frightened patient to take it; an engineer whose figures are impeccable still has to convince a committee to fund the bridge. In both cases the numeracy is a precondition and the communication is what determines the outcome. The same asymmetry runs through private life, where almost every avoidable disaster — a resentment left unspoken, a boundary never stated — is a failure of expression rather than calculation.

    So the honest position is that basic numeracy is necessary and communication is decisive. Necessary conditions matter, but they are not the same as the thing that does the work.
