IELTS Academic vs General

IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?

Take IELTS Academic for university study and professional registration; take IELTS General Training for work, migration, and training programmes. Listening and Speaking are identical in both — only Reading and Writing Task 1 differ. Your destination decides which module you need, so check its requirement first.

    What actually differs

Listening and Speaking are exactly the same in both modules. The differences are in Reading — Academic uses passages from journals and books, General Training uses notices, advertisements, and workplace documents — and in Writing Task 1, where Academic describes visual data and General Training writes a letter.

Task 2 (the essay) is broadly similar in both, though General Training prompts can be a little more everyday in tone. Because the Reading texts differ in difficulty and style, the band-score scaling for Reading is slightly different between the two.

    How to choose

Let your destination decide. Universities and professional bodies almost always require Academic; immigration programmes and many employers accept (or require) General Training. If you are unsure, confirm with the specific institution or authority before booking.

Once you know your module, your preparation is largely the same for Listening and Speaking, with module-specific practice for Reading and Writing Task 1.
