IELTS Speaking Part 1 lasts 4–5 minutes. The examiner asks familiar questions about you — home, work or study, hobbies, daily routine, preferences. It looks easy, but Band 6 candidates often give too little detail; Band 7+ candidates give concise answers that still show range.
The 2–4 sentence rule
For most Part 1 questions, aim for two to four sentences: direct answer → brief reason or example → optional contrast or future note. Example: “Do you like reading?” — “Yes, mostly non-fiction. I usually read for twenty minutes before bed because it helps me switch off from work. I rarely finish novels quickly, though — I prefer short articles.” That is enough length without sounding rehearsed.
Topic clusters to prepare (not memorise)
- Home / hometown: where you live, what you like about it, changes over time
- Work / study: what you do, why you chose it, what you enjoy or find challenging
- Free time: hobbies, sports, how often, with whom
- Preferences: food, music, travel, seasons — likes, dislikes, habits
Prepare ideas, not scripts. Examiners notice answers that ignore the exact question word (“why” vs “how often”).
Extend without drifting
Safe extension patterns: because + reason, for example + one detail, compared to the past, it depends on. Avoid launching into a two-minute story — that belongs in Part 2.
Grammar and vocabulary realistically
Part 1 rewards accurate simple and complex sentences, not rare words. Use present tenses correctly for habits; past tenses when the question asks about childhood or a specific event. If you are aiming for Band 7, show one or two less common items naturally (collocations, phrasal verbs) rather than forcing academic vocabulary onto “Do you like coffee?”
Build a Part 1 → Part 2 habit
After Part 1, the examiner moves to the cue card. Warm-up fluency from Part 1 carries forward — practise full mocks, not isolated Part 2 cards only. Use online IELTS speaking practice for short daily drills and the IELTS guide for how Speaking fits your overall band target.
