    What's on the TOEFL iBT

    The TOEFL iBT measures four skills — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Since January 2026 it is an adaptive test scored on a 1–6 scale (in half-band steps, which ETS describes as more intuitively aligned to the CEFR): Reading and Listening route you between modules of different difficulty based on your performance, and Speaking and Writing use new task types (Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview; Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion).     On the 2026 scale, each section and the overall score run 1–6 (overall = the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band); in ETS's comparison table a 5 corresponds to 95+ on the old 0–120 scale. A 'good' score is relative to your target programs, which publish their own minimums — increasingly as a CEFR level or 1–6 score alongside the legacy 0–120. Check your universities, then work backward to a section target.
