What an IELTS Listening test looks like

Four parts, 40 questions, about 30 minutes of audio, and you hear it once. Part 1 is an everyday conversation (bookings, forms), Part 2 a talk about a place or event, Part 3 a discussion between students, Part 4 a lecture. Each part is harder than the one before.

On paper you get 10 extra minutes to copy your answers to the sheet. On computer you get 2 minutes to check them. Either way, spelling counts, and so do plurals. The test is the same for Academic and General Training.

How to get more out of each practice test

    1. Play it once, with no pausing. Pausing a practice test is like doing push-ups with your knees on the floor: it feels good and proves nothing.
    2. Read the questions before each part starts. Guess what kind of word goes in each gap (a number, a name, a plural noun) before you hear a thing.
    3. Mark it, then open the explanation for every wrong answer. Most listening marks are lost to the first thing you heard: the time that gets corrected, the option that's rejected a sentence later.
    4. Check spelling and plurals on every answer you got 'nearly right'. In the real test nearly right is wrong.

    Questions people ask

Are these real IELTS Listening tests?
They are the tests from the official Cambridge IELTS books (1 to 21), with the original recordings. Cambridge writes the real exam, so these past papers are the closest practice you can get.
Are the listening practice tests free?
Yes. A free Langujet account gets up to 10 listening tests a day, and the answer pages, explanations and self-marking on this site are free with no account at all.
Is IELTS Listening different for Academic and General Training?
No. Both take the same Listening test and use the same band table, so every test here works for both.
How is my band worked out?
Your correct answers out of 40 go through the Listening conversion table below. The exact cut-offs move slightly from test to test, so treat the band as a close estimate.

About Band 7.0. Every test on this page has an answer page with a self-marker that converts your score for you.
