Early on, do one section at a time. You're learning the format, and a two-hour-and-forty-minute sitting teaches you more about being tired than about IELTS.

In the final three or four weeks, switch to full mock tests under real timing. Stamina is a skill. Plenty of candidates who read well at 10am fall apart on Passage 3 after a full Listening paper, and the only way to find out is to sit the whole thing.

Look at your lowest band first, not your overall. Many universities and visa routes set a minimum per skill, so a 5.5 in Writing can sink an overall 7. Your best skill doesn't get a vote.

Then pick one fix. Not "improve my writing" but something you can actually practise: a clearer position in the Task 2 introduction, an overview sentence in Task 1, or waiting for the speaker's final answer in Listening. Practise that for a week, then take another mock test and check it moved.

Free practice questions are great for getting used to the question types. What they usually can't do is score your Writing and Speaking, which is exactly where most candidates get stuck.
