What an IELTS Speaking test looks like

Three parts, 11 to 14 minutes. Part 1 is short questions about you: home, work or study, hobbies. Part 2 is the cue card: one minute to prepare, then up to two minutes on your own. Part 3 is a discussion of bigger ideas linked to the Part 2 topic.

Part 1 rewards natural, extended answers (two or three sentences, not one word, not a speech). Part 2 rewards keeping going for the full two minutes. Part 3 is where Band 7 is won or lost: giving a reason, an example, and the other side of the argument.

The four things your band is made of

    Fluency and Coherence
Speaking at length without long pauses, and ideas that follow on from each other.
    Lexical Resource
Enough words to talk about any topic, and the ability to explain a word you don't know.
    Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Different structures, used mostly correctly, including when you talk about the past and the future.
    Pronunciation
How easy you are to understand: word stress, sentence stress and intonation, not your accent.

Each criterion is a quarter of the band.

How to get more out of each practice test

    1. Do the whole test in one go, out loud. Answering in your head is reading, not speaking.
    2. Time your Part 2. If you stop before 1 minute 40, you need a simple plan for the cue card, not more vocabulary.
    3. Listen back to one answer and count the fillers and restarts. That one habit drags fluency more than anything else.
    4. In Part 3, give every answer a reason and an example. It is the single move that separates Band 6 from Band 7.

    Questions people ask

Are these real IELTS Speaking tests?
They follow the Speaking tests in the official Cambridge IELTS books 1 to 21: the same Part 1 topics, the same cue cards and the same Part 3 discussions.
How many speaking corrections are free?
A free Langujet account gets 10 AI Speaking corrections a day. A review by a real IELTS teacher is an optional upgrade.
How does the AI mark speaking?
Your answers are recorded and transcribed, then marked against the public IELTS band descriptors for each of the four criteria. Treat the band as a close estimate and the notes as your to-do list.
Is Speaking the same for Academic and General Training?
Yes. Both take the same Speaking test, so every test here works for both.

The tests come from the Cambridge IELTS books, published by Cambridge University Press & Assessment. No task wording is reproduced on this page. Langujet is not affiliated with Cambridge, IDP or the British Council.
