What an IELTS Reading test looks like
Three long passages, 40 questions, 60 minutes, and nobody gives you extra time to copy answers across. The passages get harder as you go, so the 20-minutes-each plan usually turns into 17, 20 and 23.
The question types repeat across every test: True / False / Not Given, matching headings, matching information, sentence, summary and table completion, and multiple choice. Most lost marks are not about vocabulary. They are about Not Given, a heading that matches one sentence instead of the whole paragraph, or a summary answer that breaks the word limit.
How to get more out of each practice test
- Sit it timed and in one go. A test done in three sittings tells you nothing about the 60 minutes that actually decide your band.
- Mark it, then look at the wrong answers before the score. One question type will be doing most of the damage. That type is your next week of practice.
- Read the explanation for every wrong answer, not just the key. The page shows the sentence that proves it and the trap that caught you, and the trap is what you'll meet again.
- Retake the same test a week later. If the same questions fall over, you learnt the answers, not the method.
IELTS Reading score out of 40 to band
| Correct answers | Band |
|---|---|
| 39-40 | 9.0 |
| 37-38 | 8.5 |
| 35-36 | 8.0 |
| 33-34 | 7.5 |
| 30-32 | 7.0 |
| 27-29 | 6.5 |
| 23-26 | 6.0 |
| 19-22 | 5.5 |
| 15-18 | 5.0 |
| 13-14 | 4.5 |
| 10-12 | 4.0 |

Questions people ask
- Are these real IELTS Reading tests?
- They are the tests from the official Cambridge IELTS books (1 to 21), written by Cambridge, the same people who write the exam. They are past papers, so they are as close as you will get to the real test.
- Are the reading practice tests really free?
- Yes. A free Langujet account gets up to 10 reading tests a day, and the answer pages, explanations and self-marking on this site are free with no account at all.
- Academic or General Training?
- These are Academic Reading tests. General Training uses different texts but the same question types, so they are still good practice for the skills, but the band scale is different.
- How is my band worked out?
- Your correct answers out of 40 go through the Academic Reading conversion table below. The exact cut-offs move slightly from test to test, so treat the band as a close estimate.
- What band is 30 out of 40 in IELTS Reading?
- About Band 7.0. Every test on this page has an answer page with a self-marker that converts your score for you.
The tests come from the Cambridge IELTS books, published by Cambridge University Press & Assessment. No passage text or question wording is reproduced on this page. Langujet is not affiliated with Cambridge, IDP or the British Council.
