TOEFL Reading Practice Test (2026 Format)

Since January 2026 the Reading section comes in two modules. Module 1 has about 35 questions in up to 21 minutes. Module 2 has about 15 questions in up to 9 minutes, and it's easier or harder depending on how Module 1 went. You can move around inside a module, but once Module 2 starts, Module 1 is closed.

Three task types fill those modules. Complete the Words gives you a short academic paragraph with the second half of about ten words missing, and you type the letters in. Read in Daily Life uses campus material like emails, posters, schedules and app screens. Read an Academic Passage is the textbook-style text you'd expect. A useful practice test mixes all three, on the clock.

There's no coasting through the first module. It decides which version of Module 2 you get, so a careless early mistake quietly caps the rest of your section. Treat every Module 1 question as if it's the one that counts. It sort of is.

Don't just look at the total. Split your mistakes by task type. Losing points on Complete the Words usually means grammar and word-form habits (is it a noun or a verb, singular or plural?), not vocabulary size. Losing them on Read in Daily Life usually means reading too slowly for the purpose, or missing what the writer actually wants you to do.

Fix one of those patterns at a time, then take another timed Reading section and check the number moved. Untimed practice is fine for learning a task type. Only timed practice tells you if you're ready.
