TEF vs TCF for Canada: Which French Test Should You Take?
Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs and citizenship, and both test the same four skills mapped to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB/NCLC). Neither is universally easier — most candidates choose by test-centre availability, the next open date, and which question format they prefer.

Which French test does Canada accept?
For economic immigration and citizenship, IRCC accepts two designated French tests: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Both are valid for Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs, and both report results that convert to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), called the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) in French.
Because both are accepted, your choice usually comes down to logistics — which test has an available date at a centre near you — and which question format you find more comfortable after trying sample questions.
How scores map to CLB and Express Entry points
Each test reports a result per skill that converts to an NCLC/CLB level. In Express Entry, stronger French (commonly NCLC/CLB 7 and above) can earn additional CRS points on top of your English score, and IRCC runs category-based draws for French-speaking candidates.
Point values and thresholds change, so always confirm the current conversion tables and CRS rules on the official IRCC website before planning your target.
