IELTS Band Scores

IELTS Band Scores Explained: What Each Band Means (0–9)

IELTS reports a band from 0 to 9 for each skill — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — plus an overall band that is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Broadly, Band 6 is "competent", Band 7 is "good" and Band 8 is "very good". The band you actually need depends on your university or immigration goal.

How the overall band is calculated

Your overall band is the average of your four skill scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, an average of 6.25 rounds up to 6.5, while 6.125 rounds down to 6.0. This rounding rule means a single weak skill can pull your overall band down — and lifting it can round you up.

What each band means (Band 5 to 9)

Band 9 (Expert) and 8 (Very good) indicate fully or near-fully operational command of English. Band 7 (Good) means operational command with occasional inaccuracies — the level many universities and skilled-migration programs ask for. Band 6 (Competent) means generally effective command despite some errors. Band 5 (Modest) means partial command, coping with overall meaning in most situations.

These align roughly with CEFR levels: Band 7–8 ≈ C1, Band 5.5–6.5 ≈ B2. The band calculator shows the CEFR and CLB equivalents alongside your overall band.

What band score do you need?

There is no single answer — each university, professional body and immigration program sets its own minimum, commonly between 6.0 and 7.5 overall, sometimes with a minimum in each skill. Always confirm the exact requirement for your specific goal before you set a target.

How to move up a band

Most candidates gain the fastest by targeting the productive skills — Writing and Speaking — where small, specific fixes (task response, coherence, range of language) move the band. Tight feedback loops help: get a criteria-based correction, fix the issues, and resubmit. Langujet's AI feedback estimates your band per criterion so you can see exactly what is capping it.
