Practice TOEFL Writing before your exam
Get AI-powered feedback on Integrated and Independent Writing tasks. Know your score before test day.
The TOEFL Integrated Writing task gives you a short reading and a lecture that challenges it. You have 20 minutes to write about 280–300 words explaining how the lecture relates to the reading. You are not asked for your personal opinion — you are scored on selecting important points from the lecture and showing how they respond to the reading.
Read for three claims, listen for three responses
Most prompts use a reading with three main points and a lecture that casts doubt on each (different reason, opposite evidence, or alternative explanation). While reading, note one line per point. While listening, match lecture segments to reading points — order may differ, so label by idea, not paragraph number.
A four-paragraph outline (20 minutes)
- Introduction (~2 min): one sentence on the topic + one sentence stating that the lecture challenges the reading (use your own words).
- Body 1 (~5 min): reading point 1 → lecture counter.
- Body 2 (~5 min): reading point 2 → lecture counter.
- Body 3 (~5 min): reading point 3 → lecture counter.
- Buffer (~3 min): fix grammar, check you covered all three pairs, confirm word count.
Sentence patterns that stay neutral
Use reporting verbs: The reading claims that… / The professor argues that… / According to the lecture… Avoid “I think” or “In my opinion.” Paraphrase — do not copy long phrases from the reading. You do not need a conclusion paragraph; three developed body paragraphs plus a short intro is enough for a high score when coverage is complete.
Common score limits
- Missing one lecture point entirely
- Writing a opinion essay instead of a summary of the relationship
- Copying reading sentences verbatim
- Under 150 words or unfinished third point
Practise with timed feedback
After each practice essay, check: Did each body paragraph name both sides? Could someone who only read your essay understand the lecture’s role?
