The 2026 TOEFL iBT at a glance

How the TOEFL iBT is scored in 2026

Each of the four sections is reported on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, aligned to the CEFR (roughly: 5 ≈ C1, 4 ≈ B2, 3 ≈ B1, 2 ≈ A2, 1 ≈ A1). Your overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. During the transition period, your score report also shows a comparable 0–120 total (ETS maps former requirements of 100/90/80/70 to about 5.0/4.5/4.0/3.5). There's no penalty for guessing — always answer every question. Selected-response sections (Reading, Listening) are scored automatically; the Writing Email/Discussion and both Speaking tasks are rated holistically against published rubrics.
