Stanthorpe Twinning Association: listening answers and explanations
A speaker addresses members of the twinning association that links Stanthorpe in England with Malatte in France. She reports on a recent trip, the 25th anniversary plans and fundraising, then explains the programme for the French visitors, including a day out at Farley House with a map.
Questions 11-15 come first, in order: the Malatte trip, the anniversary, fundraising, the first evening and Saturday night. The signpost 'Now on Sunday' and 'here's a map' tell you to switch to the Farley House map for 16-20, which also run in order.
Answer key and self-check
Type what you wrote and hit mark. Hide the key first if you haven't done the part yet. Every question number jumps to its explanation.
How to attack this block: Each question has all three options mentioned, usually with the wrong ones cancelled, postponed or done by someone else. Listen for the word that settles it: 'highlight', 'decided', 'record profits'. The answer is rarely the first option you hear.
Question 11
Answer: BWhen the speaker reports on last month's weekend in Malatte
What did members like most on the trip to Malatte?
The theme park trip had to be cancelled, but we all had a great time on the final boat trip down the river - that was the real highlight.
Question says → You hear
especially enjoyedthat was the real highlight
a river tripboat trip down the river
Why: 'The real highlight' means the part they enjoyed most, and it refers to the boat trip down the river.
The trap: The cheese is mentioned first and they tasted the products, but she never calls it the best part. The theme park was cancelled, so they didn't go at all.
Question 12
Answer: AStraight after she says it's 25 years since the association was founded
How will Stanthorpe mark the 25th anniversary?
we've decided to plant a poplar tree in the museum gardens. We considered buying a garden seat to put there, but the authorities weren't happy with that idea.
Question says → You hear
A tree will be plantedwe've decided to plant a poplar tree
Why: 'We've decided' signals the final plan: a poplar tree in the museum gardens.
The trap: The footbridge is Malatte's plan, not Stanthorpe's. The garden seat was considered but rejected by the authorities.
Question 13
Answer: BWhen the talk moves on to fundraising
Which event made the most money?
Our pancake evening was well attended and made record profits. And everyone enjoyed the demonstration of French cookery, which was nearly as successful.
Question says → You hear
raised most fundsmade record profits
Why: 'Record profits' is the top result. The cookery demonstration was 'nearly as successful', so it came second.
The trap: The film show is mentioned last, but its numbers were limited by the venue, so it didn't raise the most.
Question 14
Answer: CWhen she says the coach from France arrives at 5 pm on Friday
What should hosts do on the visitors' first evening?
Don't try to do too much that first evening as they'll be tired, so have dinner in the house or garden rather than eating out.
Question says → You hear
have a meal at homehave dinner in the house or garden
Why: 'Dinner in the house or garden' is a meal at home. The barbecue suggestion fits the same idea.
The trap: 'Rather than eating out' rules out the restaurant. The stroll round town is for the next morning, market day, not the first evening.
Question 15
Answer: ARight after the market-day tip, at 'On Saturday evening'
What can people do on Saturday evening?
we'll all meet up at the football club, where once again we'll have Toby Sharp and his band performing English and Scottish country songs
Question says → You hear
listen to a concertToby Sharp and his band performing English and Scottish country songs
Why: A band performing songs is a concert. The football club is just where it happens.
The trap: 'Football club' makes people pick the match, and the quiz night sounds like a competition, but Toby ran that last year.
Map labelling (A-H)
Questions 16-20
How to attack this block: Start from the car park at the bottom of the map and follow the speaker's route. Every place is fixed by a landmark: the stables, the house, the larger and smaller lakes, the path fork. Mark each letter as soon as the landmark is confirmed.
Question 16
Answer: GJust after she hands out the map and points to the car park at the bottom
Which letter is the farm shop?
it's in the old stables, which is the first building you come to. They're built round a courtyard, and the shop's in the far corner on the left.
Question says → You hear
Farm shopthe shop's in the far corner on the left
Why: From the car park, the stables are the first building. Inside the courtyard, go to the far corner on your left: that's G.
The trap: The café is in the same building but on the right as you go in. Don't confuse the two corners.
Question 17
Answer: CWhen she mentions visitors who aren't very mobile
Which letter is the disabled entry?
you might want to use the disabled entry. This is on the farside of the house from the car park.
Question says → You hear
Disabled entryon the farside of the house from the car park
Why: The car park is at the bottom, so the far side of the house is its top side, away from you. That's C.
The trap: The main entrance is the one with lots of steps, on the side nearest you. The disabled entry is on the opposite side.
Question 18
Answer: BWhen she says what children will enjoy most
Which letter is the adventure playground?
That's at the northern end of the larger lake, in a bend on the path that leads to the lake.
Question says → You hear
Adventure playgroundat the northern end of the larger lake, in a bend on the path
Why: Find the larger of the two lakes, go to its northern end and look for the bend in the path. That's B.
The trap: There are two lakes. The smaller lake comes up in the next answer, for the kitchen gardens.
Question 19
Answer: DWhen she moves on to the gardens near the house
Which letter is the kitchen gardens?
The kitchen gardens are rectangular and surrounded by a wall. They're to the north-east of the house, quite near the smaller lake.
Question says → You hear
Kitchen gardensto the north-east of the house, quite near the smaller lake
Why: Two clues fix it: north-east of the house and near the smaller lake. Rectangular with a wall describes its shape on the map. That's D.
The trap: Near the larger lake is the playground. Check which lake each place is next to.
Question 20
Answer: AThe last place she describes, 'a bit more of a walk'
Which letter is the Temple of the Four Winds?
go past the western sides of the stables and the house. … take the right-hand path. Go up there with the woods on your left and the temple is right at the end.
Question says → You hear
The Temple of the Four Windstake the right-hand path … the temple is right at the end
Why: Follow the path up the west side of the stables and the house, take the right fork, keep the woods on your left, and the temple is at the very end: A.
The trap: The left fork leads somewhere else. The woods are on your left, so the temple isn't in the woods but at the end of the right-hand path.
All three events are praised. The pancake evening made 'record profits', the cookery demonstration was 'nearly as successful'. That 'nearly' is what rules out the cookery.
The football club is the venue, not a match, and the quiz was last year. The event this Saturday is Toby Sharp's band performing songs, which is a concert.
The route to the temple has three steps: past the western side of the stables and house, right at the fork, then to the end with the woods on your left. Miss one step and you land on the wrong letter.
