Task 1 process: solar-powered drinking water production
The question
The diagram shows the production of drinking water using a solar-powered pump and filtration system. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How to answer it
A process, not a chart, so there are no numbers to compare and no trends to describe — mark schemes punish candidates who bring chart language to a diagram. Count the stages, say how many there are in your overview, name the input and the output, then walk the stages in order across two paragraphs. State whether the process is linear or has a loop; solar systems usually have one, and noticing it is a free overview sentence.
What moves the band
- Passive voice throughout: the water is drawn up, is then passed through, is stored in.
- Sequencers, but not one per sentence: initially, at the next stage, once filtered, finally.
- The overview must not contain stage detail — only how many steps, what goes in, and what comes out.
