ChatGPT is a decent grammar tutor and a poor IELTS examiner. Use it to catch slips and learn vocabulary, but don't plan your study around the band it gives you: it isn't calibrated to the IELTS descriptors, and the number can change when you ask again. To know which criterion is holding you back, use a checker that scores Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammar separately.

What ChatGPT is genuinely good for
Ask it to list grammar errors without rewriting, and it's quick and mostly right on articles, tenses and agreement. It can suggest alternatives for a word you've used five times and explain why a sentence reads awkwardly. As a second pair of eyes on language, it's useful.
Where its band scores go wrong
- No fixed scale. The same essay can get different bands in different chats, or when you add "be strict".
- It rewards fluency over task. A polished essay that ignores half the question can still get praise. Task Response is where most candidates lose marks, and it's the criterion a general chatbot checks least carefully.
- It rewrites. A better-sounding version of your essay feels like progress but teaches you nothing you can reproduce in the exam room.
- No history. Every chat starts from zero, so you can't see whether your Coherence has improved over a month.
Try it yourself
Paste one Task 2 essay into three fresh chats and ask for a band each time. Then ask once more with "mark it strictly". Compare the four answers. Then run the same essay through a criteria-based checker and read the per-criterion notes rather than the overall number. You don't need us to tell you which is more useful for planning your next week of practice.
What a criteria-based IELTS writing checker does differently
The Langujet IELTS writing checker gives a separate estimate for each of the four criteria, ties every comment to a sentence you wrote, and keeps your attempts so you can see which criterion is moving. It's still an estimate, not an official score, but every number comes with the reasons behind it.
When a professor review is worth it
In the last few weeks before the test, or when the same essay type keeps going wrong, add a human. A professor can judge whether your argument would convince an examiner, which no automated tool can promise. Topics to practise with are in the IELTS Writing Task 2 topics list.
