    Questions 11-16

How to attack this block: Fix the landmarks first: the north and south gates, the lake in the middle, the old museum, the glass houses and the adventure playground in the north. Two features are described with an old and a new position (toilets and formal gardens), so make sure you mark where things are now.

    Question 11

Answer: DThe first feature after the general overview

    Where is the café?

is still in the same place, looking out over the lake and next to the old museum

    Question says → You hear

    • cafélooking out over the lake and next to the old museum

Why: The café hasn't moved. Find the spot that faces the lake and is beside the old museum: D.

The trap: Several letters are near the lake. Use the second clue, next to the old museum, to choose.

    Question 12

Why: 'At present' gives the current position: near the adventure playground, in the corner. That's C.

The trap: The centre of the park is where they hope to move the toilets. That's a plan, not their location.

    Question 13

Answer: GWhen he says the gardens should be at their best in a month or two

Where are the replanted formal gardens?

They used to be behind the old museum, but we've now used the space near the south gate - between the park boundary and the path that goes past the lake towards the old museum.

    Question says → You hear

    • formal gardensnear the south gate - between the park boundary and the path

Why: Go in at the south gate and find the path heading past the lake to the museum. The gardens are between that path and the edge of the park: G.

The trap: Behind the old museum is the old position. 'But we've now' gives the new one.

    Question 14

Answer: HWhen he mentions the new gym for adults and children

    Where is the outdoor gym?

It's by the glass houses, just to the right of the path from the south gate.

    Question says → You hear

    • outdoor gymby the glass houses, just to the right of the path from the south gate

Why: Walk in from the south gate. On your right, by the glass houses, is the gym: H. He adds that it's a bit hidden in the trees.

The trap: The formal gardens are also near the south gate. The gym is on the right of the path, beside the glass houses.

    Question 15

Answer: AWhen he calls it 'one very successful introduction'

    Where is the skateboard ramp?

It's near the old museum, at the end of a little path that leads off from the main path between the lake and the museum.

    Question says → You hear

    • skateboard rampat the end of a little path that leads off from the main path

Why: Find the main path from the lake to the museum, then the small side path off it. The ramp is at the end of that: A.

The trap: The café is also near the museum. The ramp is at the end of a separate little path, not beside the lake.

    Question 16

Answer: EThe last map feature, about attracting bees and butterflies

Where is the wild flower area?

a bend in the path that goes round the east side of the lake, just south of the adventure playground

    Question says → You hear

    • wild flowersa bend in the path that goes round the east side of the lake

Why: Follow the path round the east side of the lake to the bend just below the adventure playground: E.

The trap: The toilets are also near the playground, but in the corner. The wild flowers are on the path bend south of it, by the lake.

    Multiple choice (choose TWO)

    Questions 17-18

How to attack this block: The playground facts come quickly in a few sentences: opening times, price, age, adults. Each wrong option twists one of these facts, for example winter changes the hours, not the price.

Why: 'Entrance is completely free' is D. Asking adults not to leave children on their own means they must be supervised, A.

    Questions 19-20

How to attack this block: Money and plants come up a lot here, but in the past tense: £80,000 has already been spent. Match each option to what is true now: the damage, the opening days and the missing palm trees.

    Question 19-20

Answer: A and C (in either order)When he says 'Lastly, the glass houses'

Which two things are true about the glass houses?

following the disastrous fire that recently destroyed their western side. … open from 10am to 3pm Mondays to Thursdays, and it's hoped to extend this to the weekend soon

    Question says → You hear

    • badly damaged by firethe disastrous fire that recently destroyed their western side
    • closed at weekendsMondays to Thursdays, and it's hoped to extend this to the weekend soon

Why: A fire destroyed the western side (C). They open Monday to Thursday and only hope to open at weekends soon, so they're closed at weekends now (A).

The trap: D: over £80,000 was already spent replacing the glass. E: the tropical palms were too expensive to replace, so you can't see them. B: he thanks past helpers, but doesn't ask for volunteers.

The questions most people get wrong

    Question 12

The council is 'hoping to change the location of the toilets' to the centre. That hasn't happened yet: the toilets are still near the adventure playground, in the corner.

    Question 13

The formal gardens used to be behind the old museum, which is said first. They're now near the south gate, between the boundary and the path past the lake.

    Question 19-20

D sounds right because so much money was spent on glass, but that money has already been spent. The open question is the palm trees, and that rules out E as well.
