First day at work: listening answers and explanations
Kaeden, a supervisor at a supermarket, welcomes Charlotte on her first day. He explains the practical steps (lockers, HR, uniform, where to find him), then goes through her tasks in the bakery, at the sushi counter and on the meat and fish counters.
Two blocks, both in order. Questions 1-6 are the first-morning practicalities; 7-10 follow her three work areas in the order of the table. Kaeden gives every answer except 3, which Charlotte says herself.

Answer
Questions 1-6 · Note completion (ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER)
How to attack this block: Expect a spelled name, a document, a floor number and a phone number read as digits. Write numbers as digits and group the phone number the way it's read out. Two of the gaps have an alternative mentioned and rejected, so wait for the confirmation.
Question 1
Answer: KaedenThe very start, when Charlotte says hello
Also accepted: kaeden
What is the supervisor's name?
It's Kaeden. Don't worry. People often get my name wrong; they never know how to spell it. It's K-A-E-D-E-N
Why: He corrects 'Aiden' and spells his name letter by letter. Copy it exactly, with a capital K.
The trap: Aiden is the wrong name Charlotte uses. Kayden or Kaiden are common misspellings.
Question 2
Answer: lockerAfter the front desk and badge, when he says he'll take her to the staffroom
Also accepted: lockers
Where should Charlotte leave her coat and bag?
Put your coat and rucksack in one of the lockers there. Take whichever one is free.
Question says → You hear
Where to leave coat and bagPut your coat and rucksack in one of the lockers there
Why: 'Rucksack' becomes 'bag', and the place is the lockers in the staffroom. The key accepts locker or lockers.
The trap: The key comes up next, but it's for the locker. Leave it in the door at the end of the day.
Question 3
Answer: passportWhen Kaeden says she needs to see Tiffany in HR
What document's number does HR need?
I was told to bring my passport with me. HR need to take a note of the number in it.
Question says → You hear
to give ... numberHR need to take a note of the number in it
Why: Charlotte says it herself: HR take the number from her passport.
The trap: Kaeden mentions an ID card as an option, but Charlotte doesn't have one, so passport stays.
Question 4
Answer: uniformStraight after the passport and ID card
What does Tiffany give Charlotte?
Tiffany will give you a uniform. They have lots in different sizes
Question says → You hear
to collectTiffany will give you a uniform
Why: 'Will give you' becomes 'to collect' from her side. The thing collected is a uniform.
The trap: The badge comes earlier, from the front desk, not from HR.
Question 5
Answer: thirdWhen Charlotte asks if HR is near the staffroom
Also accepted: 3rd
Which floor is the HR office on?
The staffroom's on the first floor, and HR are a couple of floors above that, on the third floor.
Question says → You hear
Location of HR office: on ... floorHR are a couple of floors above that, on the third floor
Why: First floor plus 'a couple' is the third floor, and he says so. Third or 3rd are accepted.
The trap: First floor is said first, but it's the staffroom. 'A couple' is two floors up, not the answer itself.
Question 6
Answer: 0412 665 903When he asks if she's got her phone ready
Supervisor's mobile numberIt's oh-four-one-two double-six-five nine-oh-three
Why: Turn the spoken number into digits: oh is 0, double-six is 66. That gives 0412 665 903.
The trap: 'Double-six-five' means 665, not 65 or 6665. Writing the 0 as the letter O also loses the mark.
Table completion (ONE WORD ONLY)
Questions 7-10
How to attack this block: Each row matches one work area, and the tasks are printed, so you can track where Kaeden is. The gaps are short describing words or nouns (a colour, a material, a substance, a piece of clothing). One word only.
Question 7
Answer: yellowIn the bakery section, after the sell-by dates
What colour labels should she use for new prices?
When something needs a new price label, put a yellow one on the package, next to the original price.
Question says → You hear
Use ... labelsput a yellow one on the package
Why: 'A yellow one' refers back to a new price label, so the labels are yellow.
The trap: Throwing old items away comes up first, but it's not part of the labelling task.
Question 8
Answer: plasticWhen they move on to the sushi takeaway counter
What kind of boxes should she re-stock at the sushi counter?
You'll see lots of flat cardboard boxes at one end of the counter. Beneath those is where we keep the plastic boxes - we run out of those really quickly
Question says → You hear
Re-stock with ... boxes if neededwe run out of those really quickly, so you should bring more from the storeroom
Why: The plastic boxes run out fast, so she brings more: that's re-stocking. The gap is plastic.
The trap: Cardboard is said first, but those boxes are just a landmark. The ones that run out are under them.
Question 9
Answer: iceOn the meat and fish counters, after the weighing scales
What does she collect from the cold-room for the fish?
The fish is laid on ice, but when that starts to melt, you'll need to get more from the cold-room.
Question says → You hear
Collect ... for the fish from the cold-roomget more from the cold-room
Why: 'Get more' refers back to the ice the fish lies on. 'Get from the cold-room' becomes 'collect from the cold-room'.
The trap: Fish is in the note already. Don't write what you collect it for; write what you collect.
Question 10
Answer: glovesWhen Charlotte asks if she needs a hat
What special item must she wear?
You won't be serving customers directly, so no. But make sure you put on thermal gloves when you take anything out of the cold-room.
Question says → You hear
Must wear specialmake sure you put on thermal gloves
Why: 'Make sure you put on' becomes 'must wear', and 'thermal' becomes 'special'. The gap is gloves.
The trap: Hat is the item Charlotte asks about, and Kaeden says no. 'Thermal' is the adjective, already covered by 'special'.
Charlotte asks about a hat, and Kaeden says no. What she must wear is thermal gloves. 'Special' in the note replaces 'thermal', so write gloves.
