    Questions 1-6

How to attack this block: The notes follow Leon's directions: area, fish market, organic shop, supermarket. Listen for a later time replacing an earlier one in question 3, and for small details like a sign or a colour that are easy to miss because they're said in passing.

    Question 1

Answer: harbourRight at the start, when Leon tells her where to buy food

    Also accepted: harbor

What is Kite Place close to?

there are plenty of places to buy food in Kite Place - it's the area by the harbour.

    Question says → You hear

    • near thethe area by the harbour

Why: 'By the harbour' means near the harbour. British or American spelling (harbor) is accepted.

The trap: The bridge is the next detail, but it's how you reach the fish market, not where Kite Place is.

    Question 2

Answer: bridgeWhen Shannon asks where the fish market is

What do you cross to reach the fish market?

It's at the far end of Kite Place, so you have to go over the bridge

    Question says → You hear

    • cross the ... and turn rightgo over the bridge

Why: 'Go over' is 'cross', and the note keeps 'right' from the end of the directions. The gap is bridge.

The trap: 'Far end' describes where the market is, not what you cross.

    Question 3

Answer: 3.30When Shannon asks if it's open all day

Also accepted: 3:30 / three thirty / half three

What is the latest time she should arrive at the fish market?

It doesn't close until four, but I'd recommend going earlier than that … As long as you get there by 3.30, you should be fine.

    Question says → You hear

    • best to go before ... pm, earlier than closing timegoing earlier than that … get there by 3.30

Why: Four is closing time, and Leon advises going earlier because it runs out of things. 'By 3.30' is the time to aim for.

The trap: Four is said first, but the note separates 'closing time' from the gap. 11 is the time now.

    Question 4

Answer: RoseWhen Shannon says she wants to avoid plastic packaging

    Also accepted: rose

What is the organic shop called?

Now what's it called … it's the name of a flower. I know, it's 'Rose'.

    Question says → You hear

    • calledit's 'Rose'

Why: Leon remembers the name: Rose. Being the name of a flower makes it easy to spell.

The trap: 'Organic' and 'flower' come before the name, but neither is the name itself.

    Question 5

Answer: signWhen Shannon says the directions sound easy

What large thing should she look for outside the shop?

You can't miss it - there's also a big sign on the pavement so you can look for that.

    Question says → You hear

    • look for the large ... outsidea big sign on the pavement so you can look for that

Why: 'Big' becomes 'large', 'on the pavement' becomes 'outside', and 'look for' is kept. The gap is sign.

The trap: The big grey building and the restaurant upstairs are in the note already. The thing outside is the sign.

    Question 6

Answer: purpleWhen Shannon says she might need the supermarket

What colour is the minibus to the supermarket?

there's a minibus that goes to the supermarket if you need it. It's purple and the number is 289.

    Question says → You hear

    • take a ... minibus, number 289It's purple and the number is 289

Why: The colour comes just before the number. 289 is printed, so the gap is purple.

The trap: The grey building comes up earlier; don't carry that colour over. The number 289 is already printed.

    Table completion (ONE WORD ONLY)

    Questions 7-10

How to attack this block: Every row has something Shannon will buy and an extra idea. In several rows one food is suggested and then turned down, so wait for the choice that sticks. One word only, and spelling counts: one answer is spelled out letter by letter.

    Question 7

Answer: samphireAfter Shannon says she needs about 12 prawns

What type of seaweed does Leon suggest?

    It's a type of seaweed. I just ask for a handful … It's S-A-M-P-H-I-R-E.

    Question says → You hear

    • a handful of ... (type of seaweed)It's a type of seaweed. I just ask for a handful

Why: The note gives 'type of seaweed' and 'a handful', so you need its name, which Leon spells out.

The trap: Spelling: an unusual word spelled in the recording must be copied exactly. Butter is how you cook it, not what you buy.

    Question 8

Answer: melonWhen Shannon says she'll get beans and something for dessert

What will Shannon buy for dessert?

    How about a mango? … I'm not sure - they're not always ripe. I'd prefer a melon - it's bigger too.

    Question says → You hear

    • a ... for dessertI'd prefer a melon

Why: Shannon turns down Leon's mango and chooses a melon instead.

The trap: Mango is said first, by Leon, and rejected because they aren't always ripe.

    Question 9

    Answer: coconutRight after the melon

Along with spices, what else could she get at the organic shop?

The owner also sells a lot of spices there that you can put in a curry, and things like coconut.

    Question says → You hear

    • spices andspices … and things like coconut

Why: The table pairs spices with the gap, and Leon pairs them with coconut.

The trap: Curry is what she's cooking, not something the shop sells. Beans are already in the 'To buy' column.

    Question 10

Answer: strawberryAt the end, after the brown bread

What kind of tart does Leon recommend?

Like cakes? I love chocolate cake. … Well - not that, but they have a whole range of tarts and the best are the strawberry ones.

    Question says → You hear

    • a ... tartthe best are the strawberry ones

Why: 'The best are the strawberry ones' means strawberry tarts. 'Tart' is printed, so the gap is strawberry.

The trap: Chocolate is what Shannon wants, but Leon says 'not that': the bakery doesn't sell chocolate cake.

The questions most people get wrong

    Question 3

Three times come close together: closing at four, 'by 3.30' and 'only 11 now'. The note says 'best to go before', which is 3.30.

    Question 8

Leon suggests a mango, but Shannon says mangoes aren't always ripe and she'd prefer a melon. The answer comes from her, after the rejected option.

    Question 10

Shannon asks for chocolate cake; Leon says 'not that' and recommends the strawberry tarts. 'Tart' is printed, so you only write strawberry.
