    Soccer club meeting: listening answers and explanations

    A speaker at a soccer club meeting tells parents and children about changes for the new season. He covers the venue and events, the junior and senior teams and their training, and introduces the new committee and what each member will do.

    Three blocks in the order of the talk: events (11-13), then the junior row and senior row of the table (14-17), then the committee members one by one (18-20). Each committee name is announced before their job, so the names are your signposts.

    Questions 11-13

    How to attack this block: Three quick facts from the start of the talk: where the meeting is, the first event and what players get at the final dinner. All three answers are single nouns said almost exactly as in the sentences.

    Question 11

    Answer: clubhouseWhen the speaker moves on to meetings

    Where in King's Park is the next meeting?

    Now for meetings, we're going to use the clubhouse in King's Park, and the next meeting will be held in the clubhouse on the 2nd of July.

    Question says → You hear

    Why: The clubhouse is said twice, both times with the meeting. One word: clubhouse.

    The trap: Royal Park was last season's ground for matches. It's not where meetings are held this year.

    Question 12

    Answer: picnicStraight after the meeting date

    What is the first event of the season?

    As usual, we hope to begin the season with a picnic next Saturday at the clubhouse.

    Question says → You hear

    Why: 'Begin the season with' matches 'the first event'. Write picnic.

    The trap: The dinner is mentioned right after, but it's at the end of the season.

    Question 13

    Answer: prizesWhen he mentions the last week of the season

    What do players receive at the final dinner?

    we usually have a dinner and presentation of prizes to the players

    Question says → You hear

    • players receivepresentation of prizes to the players

    Why: 'Presentation of prizes to the players' means the players receive prizes. Plural: prizes.

    The trap: 'Presentation' fits the meaning loosely, but players receive prizes, not a presentation.

    Questions 14-17

    How to attack this block: Juniors first, then seniors. Expect last season's numbers and a corrected time as distractors. The training gaps need a day and a time of day, so write both parts.

    Question says → You hear

    Why: Juniors train on Wednesday afternoons. Write the day and the time of day; singular or plural is fine.

    The trap: Saturday mornings is when juniors play their games, which is in a different column.

    Question 16

    In the senior competition, there'll be four teams, the same as last year

    Question says → You hear

    Why: Four senior teams, the same as last year. Write 4.

    The trap: Ten and five from the junior row are still in your head. Make sure you're on the senior row.

    When do seniors train?

    the training session for seniors … planned for Sunday

    Question says → You hear

    Why: The seniors' training is planned for Sunday afternoons. Write Sunday afternoon(s).

    The trap: Saturday afternoons and the 2.30, then 2 o'clock, start are about senior games, which are already in the table.

    Questions 18-20

    How to attack this block: Each gap is a short verb phrase describing a job, in the form 'to ...'. The speaker says each one in a full sentence, so cut it down: verb plus object.

    Question 18

    What will the treasurer do?

    she's the treasurer, and she will collect the fees from you

    Question says → You hear

    Why: Gina will collect the fees. Write collect fees (collect the fees or collect money is also accepted).

    The trap: 'Buy some new equipment' comes next, but that's what the club will do with the money, not Gina's job.

    What will the secretary do?

    Why: David's job is to send out newsletters regularly. Write send newsletters (send out newsletters is also fine).

    The trap: Parents are asked to give David information, but that's what you do. His job is sending the newsletters.

    Question 20

    Also accepted: supervise the teams

    What will the head coach do?

    He will continue to supervise the teams, at training sessions and on match days.

    Question says → You hear

    • Head Coach - tocontinue to supervise the teams

    Why: Jason will supervise the teams. Write supervise teams or supervise the teams, within three words.

    The trap: 'Training sessions' and 'match days' are when he does it. Also, 'former player' describes him, not his job.

    The questions most people get wrong

    Question 14

    'Ten teams, instead of five': five was last season. The table wants this season's number, 10.

    Question 17

    Saturday afternoon and the 2.30-to-2 o'clock correction are both about senior games, already in the table. Training is on Sunday afternoons.

    Question 18

    Gina collects fees, but the speaker goes on about buying new equipment with the money. The treasurer's job is to collect fees, not buy equipment.
