    Questions 11-20 · 10 marks · 2 question blocks

    How the answers come

Jenny gives every answer, in order. Questions 11-13 come from the first half, where she sorts jobs into the four colour teams. 'Now that everyone knows what team they're in' marks the switch to the programme table, which she reads out from top to bottom.

    Questions 11-13

How to attack this block: Several jobs are mentioned for each team, and similar jobs go to different teams: ticket stamping versus ticket handing out, directing cars versus directing people, chefs versus waiters. Listen to the exact job, not just a key word like 'tickets' or 'directing'.

    Question 11

Answer: DRight after the phone staff join the red team

    Which team checks entrance tickets?

Now we've also put the entrance staff on the red team and you'll be stamping the entrance tickets

    Question says → You hear

    • checking entrance ticketsstamping the entrance tickets

Why: Stamping tickets at the entrance is checking them, and the entrance staff are on the red team: D.

The trap: B, yellow, is the trap: 'those of you involved in distributing entrance tickets' are yellow, said straight after. Giving out tickets is not checking them.

    Question 12

Answer: AWhen Jenny moves to the hospitality staff

    Which team prepares refreshments?

So the chefs among you and the kitchen hands will all need a blue t-shirt

    Question says → You hear

    • preparing refreshmentsthe chefs among you and the kitchen hands

Why: Chefs and kitchen hands prepare the food, and they're in the blue team: A.

The trap: Waiting staff and bar staff are on the yellow team. They serve food and drink, but they don't prepare it.

    Question 13

Answer: CAfter the waiting and bar staff

Which team directs traffic in the car parks?

Those who will be monitoring and directing the traffic in the car parks are on the green team

    Question says → You hear

    • directing car-park trafficdirecting the traffic in the car parks

Why: Car-park traffic goes to the green team: C.

The trap: Straight after, attendants 'direct the human traffic' in the hall, and they're red. Same verb, different traffic.

Table completion (NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER)

    Questions 14-20

How to attack this block: The programme goes in time order, and each slot comes with a place and a person. Listen for place names (ground floor, Lecture Room 311, Main Hall) and titles with capitals. Several floors are mentioned, so match each one to the right event.

    Question 14

Answer: taxAt 9.30, when Anne from accounts is introduced

What forms will Anne Smith hand out?

She will also be handing out your tax forms

    Question says → You hear

    • will give out the ... formshanding out your tax forms

Why: 'Handing out' matches 'give out', and the forms are tax forms. One word: tax.

The trap: Pay is the other thing Anne deals with, and it's already in the table.

    Question 15

Answer: securityWhen Peter Chen, the conference manager, is introduced

What arrangements will Peter Chen explain, besides fire exits?

He will also go through the security arrangements with you and show you the fire exits.

    Question says → You hear

    • will explain about arrangements forgo through the security arrangements

Why: 'Go through' matches 'explain'. The gap goes before 'and fire exits', so security.

The trap: The plan of the conference centre is the first thing he covers, already in the table.

    Question 16

Answer: ground floorAt 10.30, the coffee break

    Where is the staff canteen?

    Question says → You hear

    • go to Staff Canteen on thethe staff canteen which is located down on the ground floor

Why: The canteen is on the ground floor. Two words; 'the' is printed.

The trap: Level 2 (accounts) and the first floor (lunch) are other floors mentioned in the talk.

Also accepted: Lecture Room 311 / room 311

    Where is the video shown?

instead of coming back here we'd like you all to go to lecture room 311

    Question says → You hear

    • Video Presentation - go togo to lecture room 311

Why: The video is in Lecture Room 311, on the same level as the talk. Write it in figures; Room 311 is also accepted.

The trap: 'Instead of coming back here' tells you the room changes. Don't write the current room.

    Question 18

Answer: Safety at WorkStraight after the room number

    What is the video called?

there you will be shown a video about important safety issues in the workplace called safety at work

    Question says → You hear

    • video titlecalled safety at work

Why: 'Called' introduces the title: Safety at Work. Capitals are good practice for a title.

    Question 19

Answer: Main HallWhen Jenny reaches lunch, the end of the morning

    Where is the buffet lunch?

we'll be serving you a buffet lunch in the main hall which is on the first floor from 12 o'clock

    Question says → You hear

    • go to the ... on 1st floorin the main hall which is on the first floor

Why: The lunch is in the Main Hall, which is on the first floor. Two words.

The trap: The staff canteen is where coffee is, not lunch.

    Question 20

Answer: team leadersAt the very end, after lunch

Who will they meet after lunch?

After lunch you'll be divided up into your teams to meet your team leaders

    Question says → You hear

    • Meet theto meet your team leaders

Why: They'll meet their team leaders. 'Team' alone isn't enough: it's the leaders they meet.

The trap: 'Teams' comes first in the same sentence, but they're divided into teams in order to meet the leaders.

The questions most people get wrong

    Question 11

Tickets come up twice: the entrance staff who stamp tickets are red, the staff who hand out tickets are yellow. The question says checking, which is stamping, so red.

    Question 13

Directing comes up twice too: traffic in the car parks (green) and people around the centre (red). The question is about the car park.

    Question 16

Level 2, the ground floor and the first floor all come up. The canteen is on the ground floor; level 2 is Anne's office and the first floor is lunch.
