Student Job Centre: listening answers and explanations
A student, Anita, visits the university's Student Job Centre looking for part-time work. The agent checks her course, offers three jobs that don't suit her timetable, takes her details and finally finds her an office job with an interview.
Three blocks in order. Questions 1-2 are about her studies at the start. Questions 3-5 come as the agent offers three jobs and Anita turns each one down. Questions 6-10 start when the agent says 'We'll fill in the personal details on this application form', ending with the interview time.

Note completion (NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER)
Questions 1-2
How to attack this block: Two quick facts about her course. The second one has a classic trap: two numbers come close together, and only one is the year of the course.
Question 1
Answer: businessWhen the agent asks if she's a registered student
What is the student studying?
I'm doing a degree in Business Studies. Here's my student card.
Question says → You hear
Student is studyingI'm doing a degree in Business Studies
Why: 'Doing a degree in' matches 'studying', and the subject is Business Studies. The key gives the core word: business.
The trap: Later she lives in a hall for post-graduate students and speaks some Japanese, but neither is her subject.
Question 2
Answer: thirdWhen the agent asks which year she's in
Also accepted: 3rd
Which year of the course is she in?
I've been at uni for four years but I'm in the Third Year because I took last year off.
Question says → You hear
in the ... year of the courseI'm in the Third Year
Why: She's in the third year of the course because she took last year off. Third or 3rd is accepted.
The trap: Four years is said first, but that's how long she's been at university, not her year of the course.
Table completion (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Questions 3-5
How to attack this block: Three rejected jobs in a row, each with a place and a problem. The problems are printed, so use them to follow: evening lectures, too early, evening lectures again. Watch for the agent correcting herself on the third job.
Question 3
Answer: Sports CentreThe first job the agent offers
Also accepted: Sport Centre / Sports Center / Sport Center
Where is the receptionist job?
There's a job working at the reception desk at the Sports Centre, for three evenings a week
Question says → You hear
Receptionista job working at the reception desk at the Sports Centre
Why: 'Reception desk' gives you the receptionist row, and the place is the Sports Centre. Both spellings of centre are accepted.
The trap: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays follow straight after, but the table asks where, not when.
Question 4
Answer: cleanerWhen Anita asks if there's anything during the day
Also accepted: a cleaner
What is the job at the Child Care Centre?
What about cleaning? There's a position for a cleaner at the Child Care Centre.
Question says → You hear
in the Child Care Centrea position for a cleaner at the Child Care Centre
Why: The table's first column lists job titles (Receptionist, Clerical Assistant), so the gap needs the person: cleaner.
The trap: 'Cleaning' is said first, but it's the activity, not the job title. The column needs a person, like 'Receptionist'.
Question 5
Answer: LibraryThe third job, after she turns down the 6 am start
Where is the Clerical Assistant job?
there was a position going in the Computer Lab, for three days a week that might be OK. Ah, here it is! No, it's in the Library, not the Lab., Clerical Assistant required
Question says → You hear
Clerical Assistant - WhereNo, it's in the Library, not the Lab
Why: The agent corrects herself: the Clerical Assistant job is in the Library. Putting books back on shelves confirms it.
The trap: Computer Lab is said first and with confidence, then taken back. It's a classic Part 1 correction.
Form completion (NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER)
Questions 6-10
How to attack this block: A standard details form. Expect a self-correction on the room number and a changed interview time at the end. Copy names and codes exactly.
Question 6
Answer: International HouseRight after she spells her surname
What is her address?
I'm in one of the Halls of Residence for post-graduate students, you know, International House.
Question says → You hear
AddressAnd your address, Anita? … International House
Why: Her address is the name of the hall: International House. Two words, both capitalised.
The trap: 'Halls of Residence' is a type of building, not the address. And the room number is a separate line on the form.
Question 7
Answer: B659When the agent asks for her room number at the hall
What is her room number?
Room B569 - no sorry B659. I always get that wrong.
Question says → You hear
Room No.Room B569 - no sorry B659
Why: She corrects herself, and 'I always get that wrong' confirms the second version: B659.

Also accepted: answer the phone / answer phones / answer the phones
Besides enquiries, what does the job involve?
you'll be required to deal with student enquiries and answer the phone.
Question says → You hear
Respond to enquiries anddeal with student enquiries and answer the phone
Why: 'Deal with' becomes 'respond to', and the second duty follows 'and': answer the phone (answer phones is also fine).
The trap: 'Phone' alone or 'the phone' without the verb isn't a duty. Keep 'answer'.
Question 10
Answer: 11.30The end of the conversation, when the agent offers an interview
Also accepted: 11:30
What time is the interview on Friday?
Say. Friday morning, around ten? … Could we make it a bit later? … How about eleven thirty?

Friday at ... a.m.How about eleven thirty
Why: She can't make ten, so the agent offers eleven thirty, and she accepts. Write 11.30, since a.m. is printed.
