    How IELTS requirements actually work

Two numbers matter: the overall band and, very often, a minimum in each skill. A course asking for "6.5 overall with no band below 6.0" will reject a 6.5 average that has a 5.5 in Writing — so your weakest skill frequently decides eligibility, not your average.

For study, meeting the stated minimum is usually enough. For points-based immigration (Australia and Canada), a higher band earns more points, so aiming above the minimum can directly strengthen your application. See what counts as a good IELTS score to set your target.

    Australia points test

English level is scored for skilled visas: Competent (6.0 each) is the eligibility floor, Proficient (7.0 each) adds 10 points, and Superior (8.0 each) adds 20 points — often the difference in an invitation round.

    Canada Express Entry

Your bands convert to a CLB level per skill, and higher CLB means more CRS points. Check yours with the IELTS-to-CLB converter.

    FAQ

    Common questions

Most universities ask for an overall band between 6.0 and 7.0, often with a minimum in each skill (commonly 6.0). Undergraduate courses tend to require 6.0–6.5 and postgraduate 6.5–7.0, but always confirm the exact figure for your programme.

For Australian skilled migration, 6.0 in each band is 'Competent English' and makes you eligible; 7.0 in each earns +10 points and 8.0 in each earns +20 points toward your points test. Study visas typically need 6.0–6.5 overall.

The minimum is CLB 7, which is IELTS 6.0 in each skill. Higher bands convert to higher CLB levels and earn more CRS points — CLB 9 (roughly Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0) is a common target. Use our IELTS-to-CLB converter to check.

UK universities usually require 6.0–7.0 overall depending on the course. For student visas below degree level you need UKVI IELTS at CEFR B1–B2. Since 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker visa applicants must prove English at CEFR B2 (B1 still applies when extending a visa held before that date).

For universities, meeting the requirement is usually enough. For points-based immigration (Australia, Canada), a higher band directly earns more points, so aiming above the minimum can materially improve your application.
