Should students gain work experience while studying?

    The question

Some people think students should gain work experience while they are studying, while others believe they should focus only on their academic studies. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

    How to answer it

Both sides have a real case, so do not strawman the academic one: degrees are short, attention is finite, and a student working twenty hours a week is not studying. Argue the work side on transfer — employability, money, and finding out what you do not want to do — then land on a specific position, such as structured placements yes, unrelated part-time work only where it is financially necessary.

    What moves the band

    • The word 'only' in the prompt is your lever; attack the absolute rather than the idea.
    • Education lexis: an internship, a placement year, transferable skills, academic workload.

These are candidate recalls. These are questions reported by test-takers after their exams, not official or leaked IELTS material. Wording varies by test version, location and memory. Use them for timed practice — never as a prediction of what you will be asked.
