IELTS Writing Task 2 Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Read the question carefully, because there are two versions. "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages" asks you to explain both. "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" asks for a judgement, and you must say which side is heavier.
Either way, depth beats quantity. Two advantages and two disadvantages, each properly explained, will score better than a list of eight.
More and more people are choosing to work from home. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages? Write at least 250 words.
How to structure it
- 1
Introduction
Paraphrase the trend and state which side you think outweighs the other.
- 2
Body 1
The advantages, explained with examples.
- 3
Body 2
The disadvantages, explained, and (if you think the advantages win) why they are less serious or can be managed.
- 4
Conclusion
Restate your judgement.
Working from home has become far more common in recent years, particularly since many companies were forced to try it during the pandemic. Although this shift has some real drawbacks, I believe its benefits outweigh them for most workers and employers.
The most obvious advantage is the time and money saved on commuting. An employee who previously spent an hour each way travelling now gains ten hours a week, which can be used for family, exercise or rest. Many people also find they concentrate better at home, away from the interruptions of a busy office. For employers, remote work makes it possible to recruit talented staff who live far from the company's offices, and to save on the cost of office space. There are wider benefits too: fewer commuters mean less traffic congestion, cleaner air and lower emissions in crowded cities, which benefits everyone who lives there.
That said, working from home can be isolating, and some employees, especially younger ones, miss out on the informal learning that comes from working alongside more experienced colleagues. It can also blur the line between work and personal life, leading some people to work longer hours. However, these problems can largely be managed: many organisations now combine remote work with regular office days, which preserves the benefits of flexibility while allowing colleagues to build relationships.
In conclusion, although remote work brings risks of isolation and overwork, the gains in time, productivity and access to talent are substantial. With sensible arrangements such as hybrid working, its advantages clearly outweigh its disadvantages.
