IELTS Writing Task 2 Discuss Both Views Essay
"Discuss both views and give your own opinion" has two jobs, and both are marked. You must explain each view fairly, and you must say which one you prefer. Many essays do the first and forget the second, which costs Task Response.
The cleanest structure: one body paragraph for each view, with your opinion stated in the introduction and the conclusion (and, if you like, hinted at in the paragraph you agree with).
Some people think children should start formal schooling at a very young age, while others believe they should not begin until they are seven or older. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Write at least 250 words.
How to structure it
- 1
Introduction
Paraphrase both views and state your opinion.
- 2
Body 1
The first view, with reasons and an example.
- 3
Body 2
The second view, with reasons and an example. If this is your view, say why it convinces you more.
- 4
Conclusion
Summarise both sides in one sentence and restate your opinion.
Opinions differ on when children should begin formal education. Some argue that an early start gives children an advantage, while others feel that school should be delayed until around the age of seven. In my view, a later start for formal lessons, combined with good early-years care, is the better approach.
Those in favour of an early start point out that young children learn remarkably quickly, and that structured teaching can make the most of this. Starting school at four or five, they argue, gives children a head start in reading and arithmetic, and it can be particularly valuable for children from disadvantaged homes, who may otherwise arrive at school already behind their peers. An early start also allows parents, especially mothers, to return to work sooner.
On the other hand, supporters of a later start argue that very young children learn best through play rather than formal lessons. Countries such as Finland, where formal schooling traditionally begins at seven, consistently achieve strong educational outcomes, which suggests that an early start is not necessary for later success. Pushing children to sit still and read before they are ready may also make them anxious and put them off learning altogether. Play, by contrast, develops language, concentration and social skills that make later formal learning far more effective.
In conclusion, while early schooling may offer an academic head start and practical benefits for families, I believe the evidence favours a later start, provided that younger children have access to high-quality, play-based early education in the meantime.
Why it scores Band 8: Both views explained fairly with relevant support, a clear opinion in the introduction and conclusion, and a qualified final position. 254 words.
