Why am I stuck at IELTS Writing Band 6?
I have taken several Langujet writing corrections and my score keeps landing at 6.0. My grammar is not terrible, but I still lose marks. I want to understand the most common reasons essays stay at Band 6 and what changes actually move them to Band 7.

Ideas are relevant but underdeveloped; paragraph logic needs tighter cause-effect support.

Band 6 essays usually show enough language to communicate, but they lose points in consistency: ideas are not fully developed, linking feels mechanical, and examples do not always prove the argument. If your feedback repeatedly mentions coherence or task response, those are the first places to audit.
The jump from 6 to 7 is rarely about bigger vocabulary lists. It is usually about control. A Band 7 essay makes one clear position, develops each paragraph with a real chain of reasoning, and avoids vague examples. Compare your topic sentences to your conclusion: if the logic is not tightly aligned, the score stalls.
For me the biggest change was writing fewer ideas but supporting them better. My practice improved after I started checking whether each paragraph answered the task directly.
I shared one of my Langujet reports with a teacher and they said my examples sounded generic. That matched the AI feedback almost exactly.
