National culture versus imported foreign culture
The question
Some people think that imported foreign culture is damaging national and local culture. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
How to answer it
Resist both extremes. Cultures have always borrowed, and much of what any country now calls traditional arrived from somewhere else — that is your central move. Concede the genuine asymmetry: distribution is dominated by a handful of countries, and small languages and film industries do lose ground. A partial agreement built on that asymmetry is far stronger than defending purity.
What moves the band
- Give one concrete example of a borrowed thing now considered national — food is usually the easiest.
- Culture lexis: cultural exchange, homogenisation, dilute, cultural heritage, a two-way street.
